Aaron Copland said, "You compose because you want to somehow summarize in some permanent form your most basic feelings about being alive, to set down... some sort of permanent statement about the way it feels to live now, today."
I totally agree. Here are a couple of my favorite songs and why....
(In no particular order)
#1 "On Your Porch"- The Format. (sad, self-improving)

From the first time I heard this song, I related and felt it. He talks about going through his young life with his dad being sick. But instead of helping his mom take care of his dad's sickness, he avoided it, he was so afriad to say goodbye to his dad. He feels bad he did that. His dad tells him one day, "What's left to lose, you've done enough. If you fail, well then you fail but not to us. Cause these last three years, I know they've been hard. But now it's time to get out of the desert and into the sun. Even if it's alone"
I love this so much because I relate to it so much. My mom was sick for 11 years with a spinal cord injury. Most of my life she was bedridden and in pain as my dad did what he could to take care of her. But I avoided it. My way of coping was to pretend it wasn't happening. I was depressed and felt guilty for feeling happiness because that's how it was for so long. On top of that, when she died, I felt horrible I didn't help enough; I didn't spend every hour with her. But I can completely feel my mom telling me the exact same thing.... "Cause these last (11) years, I know they've been hard. But now it's time to get out of the desert and into the sun.... even if it's alone".
#2. "We Didn't Start the Fire"- Billy Joel (Fun, historical)
I'm a history Major. I love history. Just listen to the song. It speaks for itself.
#3. "Nara" by E.S. Posthumus (Sexy, passionate love)

This song is one of the sexiest songs I've ever heard. This is love making music. Basically, when I get married, I want to be in some room next to the beach on some tropical island. With the door and windows open, the wind lightly blowing the white curtains, and in the distance the moon glowing over the shore water. Umm.. yah.. enough said.
#4. "All I Can See" by Brendan James (Helpful, selfless)

This song explains very well how I feel a purpose in my life. There are things in my life I want to do and ways I want to live. I want to see and understand people and most importantly help people. It's the best way to feel purpose and closer to who I am.
It all comes down to helping others. The best way to do that is to understand who they are and where they came from. The only way to do that is to assimilate into their lives and be a part of it in a powerful way.
He says,
"I want to learn a completely new language,
one I don't understand.
I want to help someone lost, someone helpless,
with the strength of my hand.
I want to come to the base of a statue built
before they counted the years,
and there i'll fall with my face in my hands and cry
and feel their hope in my tears.
Those who journey can easily understand,
the more they see the more they'll learn,
the more that they will be.
So this I swear to you, and this I swear to me,
I'll never rest till I've seen all I can see.
No, I'll never rest till I've seen all I can see.
I want to know where the stength of a person lies,
in their past or their future.
Is it in the way that they hurt or they love themselves
or is it all an illusion?
I want to crawl from this skin that i'm painted in...
Body, please let it give.
I want to find the creator of all good things
and ask what it means to live"
#5. "The Best Thing You Never Had" -Butch Walker (heart broken, angry)

This is one of the best break-up songs. I've actually learned to play this song on the guitar pretty well for that exact reason haha. He talks about how you feel once you've lost that person you love and care about and thought you had a future with. The feeling of being left behind, empty but fighting the feeling of worthlessness. He knows more than anything he is a good man and is worthy of loving someone but instead of wallowing in his own tears, he's angry. He focuses on the fact that it's not his loss... it's hers.
"When you act like nothing ever happened
I feel like I should feel bad
But I can't like someone who thought
They're the only one that mattered
While my heart got shattered like romantic roadkill
My heart is all splattered, your ego got fatter
And I hope that you're flattered
Cause you broke this down
The best thing that you never had"
#6. "Stand Up" by Melee (happy, determined, hopeful)

This song just makes me happy. It's about standing up for yourself. I listen to this song when I need the extra strength to do the right thing on your own regardless of people's choices around you or your own bad choices.
#7. "The Long Day is Over" by Norah Jones (Calm, Relaxing)

This is the best song to just relax and sit by a warm fire after a long day. It's just enough calmness, sexiness and soothing to make one's mind be at peace. Oh and another good suggestion for calm/reading music, "Junk" by Paul McCartney (String Quartet version from the album "Working Classical")
#8. "Every Me, Every You" by Placebo (numb, self gratifying)

This song reminds me of when I'm not necessarily thinking of my choices or caring about anything. Really, it reminds me of making out with someone I don't necessarily like or have interest it. It's almost like I'm a tad angry at my situation and need to vent. I might also blast it in the car if I'm angry.
"Sucker love is heaven sent.
You pucker up, our passion's spent.
My hearts a tart, your body's rent.
My body's broken, yours is bent."
#9. "Take Care" by Copeland (sickness, devotion)

This song makes me think of honest care of another person. He basically is taking care of someone he loves in the hospital and wont leave their side. It isn't exactly explained if he is IN love with this person or just loves them. It can be on many different levels. Regardless, this person is in serious fatal threat. It makes me think of a few different things. One my mom in the hospital a lot. And secondly, my appreciation for caring family/friends as well as my devotion for them in any circumstance.
"Don't lift a finger let me show you,
the only way to let this go.
Don't lift a finger, let me hold you.
Hold you here until the pain is all gone"
#10. "Everything" by Lifehouse (love)

I love this song because it describes so well the love of one person to another. Also how someone else can complete one's soul. I love the slow beginning but the tone and melody picks up so powerfully later into the song. He explains his love for a woman that basically keeps him going through life. I think everyone wants something like that.
"You are the light
That's leading me
To the place where I find peace again.
You are the strength, that keeps me walking.
You are the hope, that keeps me trusting.
You are the light to my soul.
You are my purpose...you're everything."
So this blog was SUPER long but I enjoyed it a lot actually. Hope you download and enjoy the songs. If you have any feelings for songs or suggestions, please don't hesitate to post them in a comment :)
